A
CD-Project of Tropical Music
The
Idea
In
the beginning, it was the idea of many to make a recording of the music of
the Capoeira with a choice of excellent musicians under optimal studio conditions.
Particular focus was to be taken of the tone-rich Berimbaus,
each one fulfilling a particular musical function, together with the percussion
instruments. Included in this project were to be the songs like the Ladainhas
and the Quadras.
Claus Jaeke, with whom I worked in 1994/95 to produce the CD anthology
Conspiração Baiana´ (Tropical Music 68.970), started
to research the most customary tempos, ways of playing, instrumental arrangements,
songs and words employed in authentic Toques. We put together
Capoeira recordings that were already available and realised straight away
that we actually wanted to design this in a completely different way. We didn´t
want to engage in some semi-ethnological fieldwork, we just wanted to have
Capoeira Music to listen to, to feel, to experience and to dance to for the
year 2001.
In the course of our research we entered, via the internet, a world of the
Capoeira that existed outside of Brazil. It surprised us to discover how many
people all over the world, even down in Bondi Beach, Australia, were actively
involved in Capoeira, either for its dance-like, spiritual content or because
of its martial and combative aspect.
It became clear to us that we couldn´t leave the music of the
Capoeira restricted to Salvador/Bahia either. Capoeira has become a global
phenomenon. This provoked us to request musicians from other cultural fields
to complement the primal musical language of the Capoeira with their own dialects,
stipulating, of course, that the basic rhythm of the Toque remain unaltered.
The CD should be from beginning to end usable´ for the Capoeirista
These

where he at the age of 14 started playing drums and percussion in luxury hotels.
In 1990 U-cef went to New York to lead the hard life of an immigrant musician.
Within a short time he became completely taken by the sounds of the city streets
and developed a special taste for hip-hop,funky urban jazz and all sorts of
polyglot metropolitan mixtures. In New York he also met the Gnawa master Hassan
Hakmoun. Four years later U-cef went to London, became a member of the techno-worldbeat
group PAN. Since the dissolution of the group U-cef has concentrated on his
vision: a radical new look at Moroccan music in the harsh glare of the late
20th century city life, fusing the spirit of drum and bass, house, funk und
Jazz with the rhythms and sounds of Marrakech, Rabat, Fez, Essaouria the Souss
valley. His first album came out on Andy Morgans APARTMENT22 label in London
( Halalium) in1999.

His actual band is called Tchaka and unites musicians from various cultures.
(CD Creolité´/Tropical Music 68.989) Haitian Vodou and
Bahian Candomblé have at least one common deity: it is Exú in
Bahia and Elegba in Haiti, both of Nago-Yoruba origin and representing a multifaceted
spirit. In Candomble Exú is the messenger between gods and men, in
Vodou Elegba (Papa Legba) , is the entity that opens the cosmic gates. Eval
pays credit to such relations with a dialogue between Rara-Vaccines and Berimbau
In Rio MARCO SCHNEIDER & CIA DA LAPA BAND has reached something
of the status of the samba-rock-blues in popular music. Their first album
é o Diabo na Rua no Meio do Rodamoínho´ was released
in 2000 and reflects three aspects of Rio de Janeiro: beauty, creativity and
violence.
ALBERT MANGELSDORFF, German jazz musician (trombone) of worldwide
fame, 72 years, lives in Frankfurt/M.
After all this is a bahian muqueca´ like hot-pot of sounds and
rhythms heard on this album Ð created by two young musicians, INUKA,
near Bremen which helped us to edit many of the remixes and recordings done
by Capoeira Mundial artists in various continents and with different recording
and mastering formats.
